The expansive catalog of the Berliner Philharmoniker is, to be brief, impressive.
Spanning at least three decades, one can find high-definition performances of many staples of classical music.
Most of the recordings are of concerts conducted by the great Sir Simon Rattle. A few of these are especially relevant to this Halloween edition of the Warble, including:
The Damnation of Faust and Symphonie fantastique by Hector Berlioz
Psycho: A Narrative by Bernard Herrmann
Erwartung by Arnold Schoenberg
(assembled in consultation with this listicle)
While there are some glaringly obvious gaps in the catalog, the trial is nonetheless good for the above pieces. If you’re a serious listener of classical music, the annual ticket is worth the investment, if only to explore the less commonly seen works that are available.
