Featured App: OverDrive

OverDrive is a free multimedia library app from OverDrive, Inc. It allows libraries to subscribe to and manage ebooks, audiobooks, and streaming video, then deliver that content to their patrons.

Libraries control which content they offer through their OverDrive interface, which is web-based and available from any PC, but users of the app may input credentials from multiple libraries and seamlessly manage their content locally from their Bookshelf. Ebooks can be read in the Adobe-powered reader that is embedded in the app or can have the content delivered to their Kindle (non-Kindle users must download the ebook to a PC if they want to add it to their e-reader).

Because of DRM and licensing, not all content is immediately available, an issue that most library patrons are familiar with. Like a library, however, users of the app can place holds on content and have it delivered to their app when it becomes available. Most material can be checked out for up to 3 weeks, though users may shorten their default loan period.
